In Q4 of 2015, I was privileged to visit my old school, Diponegoro University, Semarang, Indonesia (http://www.undip.ac.id/). During my visit, I have had a couple chance to talk about HAZOP Study through sharing session with chemical engineer colleagues. Also, this sharing session is closely aligned with the Pendidikan dan Penalaran Umum division program, called ‘Kuliah Tamu’.
It was great discussion from the minute I meet the students. Especially, when the students showed their enthusiasm spirit in learning and answering each question. As I asked them about short/ long term career planning. Then, two thirds of the students said “this sharing session is our opportunity to elevate our understanding in doing HAZOP Study which is aligned with my future goal – to be expert in doing safety studies”.
In this opportunity, I have some thoughts that I want to share on how to identify operability problem using HAZOP Study method. As the BS IEC 61882:2001 – Application Guide for HAZOP Study states: “HAZOP Study is a structure and systematic technique for examining a defined system, with the objective of identifying potential hazard in the system and identifying potential operability problems.”
As the starting point, I have started the discussion with BLEVE (Boiling Liquid Expanding Vapour Explosion) case as our safety talks. Then, the discussion is continued to HAZOP methodology and HAZOP procedure. Moreover, the foremost thing in this sharing session is doing real HAZOP simulation together. We can challenge each other when conducting this session. As HAZOP facilitator, I tried to lead the discussion to run smoothly and effectively.
In the end, I enjoyed the session with them and also really appreciated with their curiosity in learing new things. As they put it “it’s amazing how HAZOP Study works in the real industries, we would like to talk to you regarding this subject in the near future”.
