It is not the category of the industry that will define whether Process Safety Management (PSM) is needed or not in managing safety of the plant. Instead, it is the actual process arrangement in the plant, whether it is dealing with hazardous material and/or hazardous energy.
Some will think there is no need to implement a proper PSM program for Paper Mill industry. Do you agree with that? If you agree, take a look at US Chemical Safety Board (CSB) report on explosion on Water Tank in PCA DeRidder Paper Mill on 8-Feb-2017. After reading the report, we will agree that even Paper Mill industry will need to implement the principle requirement of Process Safety Management.
APP Sinar Mas is one of the world largest paper mill company, based in Indonesia. Thus, understanding and proper implementation of PSM is important for APP. The “high level safety commitment” of APP SinarMas management team has driven them to equip the relevant workforce with PSM knowledge and skill.
Alhamdulillah, LebSolution has been challenged, selected, and trusted among several potential consulting firms, to facilitate delivery of two batches PSM training for APP SinarMas workforce, attended by 30 participants from several group companies under APP in Indonesia, which were delivered in the Training Center of APP Indh Kiat Pulp & Paper Serang Mill, in December 2019.
Topics discussed in the workshop covered: context of PSM, lesson learned from several incidents, importance, definition and standards of PSM, systematic implementation of PSM, bussiness case for process safety, and leadership and workforce behaviour to achieve effective PSM performance.
Participant showed full, active, and enthusiasm from the beginning until the end of sessions. This is clearly shown in the attached video documentation. The discussion ran effectively, involving all of the participants. Some notable issues captured during the sessions found to be useful for APP SinarMas continual improvement program in PSM aspect.
